Talk2Me Help Guide

What Is the Public Radio Service (PRS)?

Public Radio Service (PRS) is Talk2Me USA’s shared push-to-talk over cellular communication platform.

PRS allows compatible Talk2Me radios to communicate with other authorized users in shared groups using cellular data or supported Wi-Fi.

PRS is a shared platform. Other authorized users outside your family, company, or organization may be present in public groups. Do not transmit private, confidential, financial, medical, or security-sensitive information.

PRS Access

PRS is included with Talk2Me radio purchases and is normally configured before the radio is shipped.

Depending on the radio model, software, and account configuration, PRS may appear as:

  • Public
  • Public Radio Service
  • PRS
  • A numbered Network option
  • Another assigned public-platform name

Do not rely on a network number alone. Labels such as Network #1 or Network #2 may vary by radio and configuration. Confirm the displayed platform name or contact Talk2Me when the correct option is unclear.

A radio may also be assigned to CRS when available, HamLink, a Talk2Me private network, or another separately assigned platform.

How PRS Works

PRS communications travel through an internet connection rather than directly between radios over a local UHF or VHF frequency.

The radio may connect through:

  • Cellular data using an active compatible SIM
  • Supported Wi-Fi on compatible models
  • Another internet connection supported by the radio and platform

Because PRS uses internet connectivity, compatible radios may communicate across much greater distances than ordinary short-range two-way radios, provided each radio is online, has PRS access, and is using the same available group.

PRS operation requires:

  • A compatible Talk2Me radio
  • An active PRS platform account
  • Working cellular data or supported Wi-Fi
  • An assigned and selected PRS group
  • Another online user in that group

Select PRS on Your Radio

On supported radios with more than one assigned platform:

  1. Press Menu.
  2. Select Network or the available platform-selection option.
  3. Highlight Public, PRS, Public Radio Service, or the applicable assigned public-platform option.
  4. Press OK or the green confirmation button.
  5. Confirm that the selected option is marked or checked.
  6. Press Exit or Back to return to the main screen.
  7. Allow the radio time to reconnect.

The menu wording and controls may vary by model.

When the Network menu is not available

A Network menu may not appear when:

  • The radio has only one assigned platform.
  • The model does not support on-device platform switching.
  • The platform is selected through a different menu or control.
  • The radio connects directly to its assigned platform.

The absence of a Network menu does not automatically indicate a defect. The 25 Mobile Base does not use the same additional Network menu found on certain other Talk2Me radios.

Select a PRS Group

After selecting PRS:

  1. Press Menu.
  2. Select Group.
  3. Review the available groups.
  4. Highlight the intended group.
  5. Press OK or the green confirmation button.
  6. Confirm that the group name appears on the main screen.
  7. Allow the selection to synchronize before transmitting.

The groups available to a radio depend on the account, permissions, configuration, and current PRS offerings.

A radio that is online but has no selected or available group may be unable to communicate with other users.

Use Push-to-Talk

  1. Confirm that PRS and the intended group are selected.
  2. Listen briefly to make sure another user is not speaking.
  3. Press and hold the PTT button.
  4. Wait a brief moment before speaking.
  5. Speak clearly while continuing to hold PTT.
  6. Release PTT when finished.

Only one user can generally transmit in a group at a time. Allow the previous user to finish before pressing PTT.

For clearer communication:

  • Keep transmissions brief.
  • Speak at a normal volume.
  • Hold the microphone several inches from your mouth.
  • Avoid covering the microphone opening.
  • Release PTT so another user can respond.

PRS Is Not Telephone Service

PRS communication occurs between compatible Talk2Me platform users and radios.

PRS cannot:

  • Call ordinary telephone numbers
  • Receive calls from the public telephone network
  • Replace normal cellular telephone service
  • Contact 911
  • Receive 911 callbacks
  • Function as an emergency-dispatch service

Some Talk2Me radio models may separately support ordinary telephone calling with a compatible voice-capable SIM and calling plan. That telephone function is separate from PRS and other Talk2Me PoC platforms.

Emergency-service limitation

Do not rely on PRS as the only method of requesting emergency assistance. Maintain an appropriate telephone or another approved way to contact 911 or the applicable emergency authority.

Coverage and Availability

PRS requires a working internet connection. Performance may be affected by:

  • Cellular coverage or Wi-Fi availability
  • Weak indoor signal
  • Network congestion
  • Buildings, metal structures, and terrain
  • Carrier maintenance or outages
  • Expired or suspended SIM service
  • Radio, antenna, or account configuration
  • Platform maintenance
  • Power or battery problems

Talk2Me does not control every cellular carrier, Wi-Fi provider, router, or internet network used to reach PRS.

No wireless service can guarantee communication in every location or circumstance.

Public Groups, Conduct, and Privacy

PRS includes shared communication areas that may contain users outside your family, business, or organization.

Users should:

  • Communicate respectfully.
  • Follow posted group and platform rules.
  • Avoid disruptive, abusive, threatening, or unlawful transmissions.
  • Protect personal and confidential information.
  • Avoid sharing passwords, payment information, security codes, or sensitive personal details.
  • Follow instructions from authorized moderators.
  • Use the service only for lawful purposes.

Talk2Me may moderate public groups and restrict or disable access when a user violates applicable rules or Terms of Service.

Do not assume PRS is private

Avoid transmitting:

  • Passwords or account credentials
  • Credit-card, banking, or Social Security information
  • Medical or protected health information
  • Confidential customer or business information
  • Private addresses, alarm codes, or access codes
  • Information that could endanger another person

Use a properly configured Talk2Me private network when communication should be limited to an approved closed group.

PRS, CRS, HamLink, and Private Networks

PlatformGeneral purpose
PRSTalk2Me’s shared public communication platform
CRSA separate Talk2Me service that may require assignment or membership when available
HamLinkA separate PoC platform intended for verified amateur-radio operators
Private networkA closed Talk2Me network limited to assigned radios and authorized users

Access to PRS does not automatically provide access to CRS, HamLink, or a private network. A radio may have separate accounts, usernames, groups, and permissions for each assigned platform.

Changing a PRS Username

A PRS username identifies the radio or user to other platform members.

Do not attempt to change platform account information through unsupported radio settings, software, or a factory reset.

Submit a PRS, CRS & HamLink Support request when:

  • The username is incorrect.
  • The username needs to be updated.
  • The radio displays another customer’s identity.
  • The radio cannot be identified on the platform.

Include the radio model, IMEI, current username, and requested username.

PRS Will Not Connect

  1. Confirm that the radio has cellular signal or supported Wi-Fi.
  2. Confirm that SIM service remains active when using cellular data.
  3. Restart the radio once.
  4. Allow up to approximately two minutes for reconnection.
  5. Confirm that PRS is selected when the radio provides a Network menu.
  6. Confirm that a valid PRS group is selected.
  7. Move outdoors or to an area with stronger cellular coverage.
  8. Record the exact message displayed.
  9. Check whether other PRS radios are affected.

Do not remove or move the SIM, change APN settings, install unsupported software, or factory-reset the radio unless Talk2Me Support provides exact instructions.

Signal bars appear but PRS remains Offline

Signal bars do not prove that cellular data or the PRS platform account is connected. The issue may involve:

  • Expired or suspended SIM service
  • Cellular-data or carrier problems
  • Incorrect platform selection
  • Missing group assignment
  • PRS account or username configuration
  • Platform maintenance
  • Radio or antenna problems

Still Need Help?

Submit a PRS, CRS & HamLink Support request when:

  • PRS does not appear as an assigned platform.
  • The radio cannot connect to PRS.
  • Groups are missing.
  • The radio can hear but cannot transmit.
  • Other users cannot hear the radio.
  • A username needs review or correction.
  • You need help understanding PRS access or conduct requirements.

Information to include

  • Customer name
  • Order number, when available
  • Radio model
  • IMEI
  • Current username
  • Selected platform or network
  • Selected group
  • Number of affected radios
  • Approximate date and time the problem began
  • Whether cellular signal bars appear
  • Whether supported Wi-Fi works
  • Photographs or screenshots of the display
  • Troubleshooting already completed
  • Existing support-ticket number
