HamLink is Talk2Me USA’s push-to-talk over cellular platform created for verified amateur-radio operators.
It combines cellular-data and supported Wi-Fi connectivity with amateur-radio communities and approved linked systems. HamLink can help licensed operators remain connected while traveling, indoors, outside normal RF coverage, or where installing a traditional antenna is impractical.
HamLink is a PoC platform. It communicates through the internet and is separate from the physical UHF/VHF function found on certain Talk2Me Rescue radios.

Who May Use HamLink?
HamLink is restricted to properly licensed amateur-radio operators.
Before access is activated or maintained, Talk2Me may verify:
- Amateur-radio callsign
- License status
- License identity
- Eligibility to use the service
International operators may be asked to provide equivalent licensing information from their country.
An unlicensed person may own or use a compatible Talk2Me PoC radio for other assigned Talk2Me services, but HamLink access requires the applicable amateur-radio license verification.
Purchasing a radio does not grant an amateur-radio license. HamLink access also does not authorize traditional UHF/VHF transmission beyond the privileges provided by the operator’s license.
How HamLink Works
HamLink communications travel through an internet connection rather than relying entirely on direct radio-frequency propagation.
A compatible radio may connect through:
- Cellular data using an active compatible SIM
- Supported Wi-Fi
- Another internet connection supported by the radio and platform
Once connected, the radio communicates through the HamLink platform and its available groups, talkgroups, nodes, or approved linked systems.
This may allow operators to communicate across distances outside the normal range of a handheld radio, local repeater, or direct RF signal, provided the radio has working internet access and an active HamLink account.
Approved Amateur-Radio Network Connections
Through approved integrations, partnerships, repeaters, reflectors, and network owners, HamLink may provide access to compatible amateur-radio systems such as:
- BrandMeister
- TGIF
- AllStarLink
- EchoLink
- DMR
- D-STAR
- System Fusion or YSF
- Other approved linked systems
Availability varies. Connections may differ by radio, account, group, region, third-party integration, network-owner approval, and current platform configuration.
HamLink access does not automatically provide access to every talkgroup, repeater, node, reflector, or third-party amateur-radio network.
What You Need
To use HamLink, you generally need:
- A valid amateur-radio license and callsign
- A compatible Talk2Me PoC radio
- Completed HamLink verification and platform access
- Active cellular data, supported Wi-Fi, or another supported internet connection
- An available HamLink group or talkgroup
SIM service and HamLink platform access are separate. A verified HamLink account cannot connect when the radio has no working internet connection.
HamLink and Traditional RF Are Separate
HamLink is a PoC platform that communicates through cellular data or supported Wi-Fi.
It does not replace the separate UHF/VHF function included with certain Talk2Me Rescue radios. The analog or digital RF side of a compatible radio operates independently from HamLink.
| HamLink PoC | Traditional UHF/VHF |
|---|---|
| Uses cellular data or supported Wi-Fi | Uses programmed radio frequencies |
| Uses HamLink platform accounts and groups | Uses direct or repeater-based RF communication |
| Requires working internet access | May operate without cellular or internet service |
Operators remain responsible for lawful frequency use, proper programming, repeater permission, identification, and all other requirements applicable to their amateur-radio privileges.
Talk2Me does not preprogram unauthorized UHF/VHF frequencies before shipment.
Select HamLink on Your Radio
On supported radios with multiple assigned platforms:
- Press Menu.
- Select Network or the available platform-selection option.
- Highlight HamLink or the assigned HamLink network.
- Press OK or the green confirmation button.
- Confirm that the selected option is marked or checked.
- Return to the main screen.
- Allow the radio time to reconnect.
- Open Group and select an available HamLink group or talkgroup.
The displayed name, menu location, and controls may vary by model and configuration.
When the Network menu is not available
A Network menu may not appear when the radio has only one assigned platform, does not support on-device switching, or connects directly to its assigned account.
The absence of a Network menu does not automatically indicate a defect.
Use Push-to-Talk
Before transmitting:
- Confirm that HamLink is selected.
- Confirm that the intended group or talkgroup is displayed.
- Listen before transmitting.
- Press and hold the PTT button.
- Wait a brief moment before speaking.
- Identify using your amateur-radio callsign as required.
- Speak clearly while continuing to hold PTT.
- Release PTT when finished.
Only one user can generally transmit in a group at a time. Keep transmissions brief and follow the identification, operating, conduct, and licensing requirements applicable to the connected system.
Emergency and Service Limitations
HamLink may provide an additional communication option when cellular data or supported Wi-Fi remains available. However, it depends on internet connectivity and may be affected by coverage gaps, congestion, outages, platform maintenance, account issues, power failure, or hardware problems.
HamLink cannot:
- Connect to ordinary telephone numbers
- Place or receive standard telephone calls
- Contact 911
- Receive 911 callbacks
- Guarantee delivery of a transmission
- Replace an appropriate emergency-communication plan
HamLink is not an emergency-dispatch service.
Operators involved in emergency communications should maintain the equipment, procedures, authorized frequencies, and alternative methods appropriate for their activities. Keep another approved way to contact 911 or the applicable emergency authority.
HamLink Will Not Connect
- Confirm that the radio has cellular signal or supported Wi-Fi.
- Confirm that SIM service is active when using cellular data.
- Restart the radio once.
- Allow up to approximately two minutes for reconnection.
- Confirm that HamLink is selected when the radio provides a Network menu.
- Confirm that an available HamLink group or talkgroup is selected.
- Move outdoors or to an area with stronger cellular coverage.
- Confirm that amateur-radio license verification has been completed.
- Record the exact message displayed.
Do not remove or move the SIM, change APN settings, install unsupported software, or factory-reset the radio unless Talk2Me Support provides exact instructions.
Signal bars appear but HamLink remains Offline
Signal bars do not prove that cellular data or the HamLink account is connected. The issue may involve:
- Expired or suspended SIM service
- Cellular-data or carrier problems
- Incorrect platform selection
- Missing group assignment
- Incomplete or outdated license verification
- HamLink account configuration
- Platform or third-party network availability
- Radio or antenna problems
Groups or talkgroups are missing
Available groups may depend on:
- License verification
- Radio configuration
- Account permissions
- Network partnerships and integrations
- Group-owner approval
- Regional availability
- Temporary platform changes
- The services assigned to the radio
Talk2Me may need to review or update the radio’s HamLink access.
Callsign or Username Changes
The displayed HamLink identity should accurately identify the verified operator or approved radio account.
Submit a support request when:
- The callsign is incorrect.
- The radio displays another operator’s identity.
- The operator’s license information has changed.
- The radio was transferred to another licensed operator.
- The displayed username does not match the verified account.
Talk2Me may require updated license verification before changing or transferring HamLink access.
Do not attempt to change HamLink account information through unsupported settings, software, or a factory reset.
