A Talk2Me private radio network is a closed push-to-talk over cellular communication environment created for a specific customer, family, business, organization, or team.
Only radios and users assigned to that private network can normally access its groups and communications.
Private networks are separate from shared Talk2Me platforms. A radio may have access to both a private network and a shared service such as Public Radio Service (PRS) or HamLink, but each platform has its own users, groups, permissions, and account assignments.
| Private network feature | What it means |
|---|---|
| Closed access | Only assigned radios and authorized users can normally access the network |
| Wide-area communication | Radios communicate through cellular data or supported Wi-Fi rather than needing to remain physically close |
| Customer groups | Radios can be organized by department, vehicle, location, job function, family group, or another approved use |
| Administrator tools | Some customers receive Platform Manager access for supported user and group management |

How a Private Network Works
Talk2Me private networks use push-to-talk over cellular technology, commonly called PoC.
Compatible radios connect through:
- Cellular data using an active compatible SIM
- Supported Wi-Fi on compatible models
- Another internet connection supported by the radio and platform
When a user presses PTT, the radio sends the transmission through the Talk2Me platform to other authorized radios in the selected private-network group.
The radios do not need to be physically close. They may communicate across large distances when each radio has:
- A working internet connection
- Active private-network platform access
- The correct private network selected
- Permission to use the selected group
- Sufficient battery or stable external power
Private-network communication depends on the cellular carrier, Wi-Fi provider, internet path, Talk2Me platform, and receiving radios. No wireless system can guarantee communication in every location or circumstance.
Who Can Use the Private Network?
Private-network access is limited to radios and users authorized for that network.
Depending on the customer’s setup, authorized users may include:
- Family members
- Employees
- Drivers
- Security personnel
- Maintenance or service teams
- Event staff
- Volunteers
- Organization members
- Other approved users
Owning a Talk2Me radio does not automatically provide access to another customer’s private network.
Talk2Me must assign or approve the applicable platform account before the radio can connect.
Private Networks and Shared Platforms
A radio may have access to both:
- A Talk2Me private network
- A shared platform such as PRS
- CRS when available and assigned
- HamLink for a verified amateur-radio operator
These are separate communication environments.
| When selected | The radio uses |
|---|---|
| Private network | The customer’s assigned private users, groups, usernames, and permissions |
| PRS, CRS, or HamLink | The groups, identities, and permissions available on that separately assigned platform |
Changing platforms does not merge their users or groups. A private-network username or group assignment does not automatically apply to PRS, CRS, or HamLink.
Select Your Private Network
On supported radios with more than one assigned platform:
- Press Menu.
- Select Network or the available platform-selection option.
- Highlight the private-network option.
- Press OK or the green confirmation button.
- Confirm that the selected network is marked or checked.
- Press Exit or Back to return to the main screen.
- Allow the radio time to reconnect.
- Open Group and select the intended private-network group.
The private network may appear as:
- The company, family, organization, or network name
- An assigned account identifier
- A numbered Network option
- Another configured platform name
Do not rely on Network #1 or Network #2 alone. Numbered labels vary by radio and configuration. Confirm the displayed network name whenever possible.
A Network menu may not appear when the radio has only one assigned platform or the model does not support on-device switching.
Private-Network Groups
Groups organize radios within the private network and determine which assigned users hear a transmission.
A business network may use groups such as:
- Main
- Dispatch
- Management
- Sales
- Service
- Security
- Warehouse
- Drivers
- Maintenance
A family or personal network may use groups such as:
- Family Main
- Parents
- Travel
- Property
- Emergency Coordination
A radio may belong to more than one group, but the user normally selects one active group at a time.
Only radios assigned to a group can normally hear or transmit within that group.
Radio Usernames
Each private-network radio is assigned a username or identity that helps other users determine who is transmitting.
A username may represent:
- A person
- A vehicle
- A department
- A job function
- A location
- A unit number
Examples include Dispatch, Unit 4, Security 2, Farm Truck, Warehouse, John, and Maintenance.
Usernames should be clear, unique, appropriate, and short enough to display correctly.
Platform Manager
Some private-network customers receive access to the Talk2Me Platform Manager.
Depending on the account and available permissions, authorized administrators may be able to:
- View private-network users
- View radio IMEIs and usernames
- Create or edit supported groups
- Change radio usernames
- Review account or user status
- Enable or suspend supported user settings
- Add administrative notes
- Update account contact information
- Change the Platform Manager password
Open the Talk2Me Private Network Platform Manager
Platform Manager is separate from the Talk2Me Support Center. A radio user may communicate through the private network without having administrator access.
Add, Suspend, or Remove a Radio
Add a radio
A new radio must be assigned to the correct private-network account. Talk2Me may need:
- Private-network name
- Customer or company name
- Radio model
- Radio IMEI
- Requested username
- Requested groups
- Primary contact information
- Order or purchase information
A radio does not gain access merely because it is physically near another radio on the network. Its platform account must be configured correctly.
Suspend or remove a radio
A radio may need to be suspended, removed, or reassigned when:
- It is lost or stolen.
- An employee or member leaves.
- The radio is sold, transferred, or replaced.
- The user no longer needs access.
- Unauthorized activity is suspected.
An authorized Platform Manager administrator may be able to suspend supported user accounts. Contact Talk2Me before deleting or reassigning a user when the effect on service continuity is unclear.
Suspending private-network access does not necessarily disable every function of the physical radio. Depending on the model and assignments, the device may still support another Talk2Me platform, supported Wi-Fi, separate cellular features, or UHF/VHF operation.
Private-Network Access and SIM Service Are Separate
Private-network platform access and cellular SIM service are related but separate.
| Private-network platform | Cellular SIM service |
|---|---|
| Authorizes the radio and username | Provides cellular-data connectivity |
| Controls groups and user permissions | Depends on an active plan and compatible carrier coverage |
| Allows communication with assigned private-network radios | Carries the internet connection used to reach the platform |
A radio may have valid private-network access but remain Offline when:
- SIM service has expired or been suspended.
- Compatible cellular coverage is unavailable.
- The wrong platform is selected.
- The radio has no usable internet connection.
- The radio, antenna, battery, or power supply has a problem.
Some compatible radios may continue connecting through supported Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable.
Privacy and Communication Limitations
Private networks are designed to limit communication to assigned radios and authorized users. Users should still avoid transmitting:
- Passwords or account credentials
- Complete payment-card or bank-account information
- Social Security numbers
- Confidential medical information
- Alarm, gate, or security codes
- Sensitive customer or business information
- Information that could create a safety risk
Access should be suspended or removed promptly when a radio is lost, stolen, transferred, or no longer controlled by an authorized user.
Private networks are not telephone service
A Talk2Me private PoC network cannot:
- Connect to ordinary telephone numbers
- Place or receive standard telephone calls
- Contact 911
- Receive 911 callbacks
- Replace a public-safety dispatch system
- Guarantee communication during a cellular, Wi-Fi, internet, or power outage
Some radio models may separately support telephone calling with a compatible voice-capable SIM and service plan. That function is separate from the Talk2Me private network.
Do not rely on a private PoC network as the only method of requesting emergency assistance. Maintain an appropriate telephone or another approved emergency-communication method.
Recording and Optional Features
Routine radio communications are not recorded merely because radios use a Talk2Me private network.
Optional dispatch, recording, monitoring, GPS, or management features may be available depending on the customer’s system and service configuration.
Customers should confirm which features are enabled and review all applicable laws, consent requirements, employment policies, and organizational rules before using any optional recording, monitoring, or location feature.
The Private Network Will Not Connect
- Confirm that the radio is powered on.
- Confirm that cellular signal or supported Wi-Fi is available.
- Restart the radio once.
- Allow up to approximately two minutes for reconnection.
- Confirm that the private network is selected.
- Confirm that the correct private-network group is selected.
- Confirm that cellular SIM service is active when using cellular data.
- Check whether other radios on the same private network are affected.
- Test the radio in another location when possible.
Do not remove or move the SIM, change APN settings, install unsupported software, or perform a factory reset unless Talk2Me Support provides exact instructions.
Only one radio is affected
The issue may involve that radio’s SIM, signal, antenna, username, account assignment, selected group, battery, power supply, or hardware.
Several radios are affected
The issue may involve a cellular or internet outage, private-network account change, group configuration, multiple expired SIM plans, or platform availability.
