A push-to-talk over cellular radio, commonly called a PoC radio, combines the familiar push-to-talk operation of a two-way radio with internet-based communication.
Instead of communicating directly from one radio to another over a local UHF or VHF frequency, a PoC radio sends voice communications through cellular data or supported Wi-Fi and an internet-connected communication platform.
In simple terms: press PTT, speak, release PTT, and the Talk2Me platform delivers the message to other connected radios in the selected group.

How PoC Communication Works
When a user presses the PTT button:
- The radio captures the user’s voice.
- The transmission travels through cellular data or supported Wi-Fi.
- The Talk2Me platform routes it to the selected group.
- Other online radios in that group receive the transmission.
- The user releases PTT so another person can respond.
Only one person can generally speak in a group at a time. PoC is often described as radio-to-radio, app-to-app, or account-to-account communication over the internet.
PoC communication is not an ordinary telephone call. It does not use the public telephone network simply because it operates through cellular data.
What a PoC Radio Requires
A Talk2Me PoC radio generally requires:
- Compatible radio hardware
- An assigned and active Talk2Me platform account
- An active cellular-data SIM or supported Wi-Fi connection
- Available internet access
- The correct Talk2Me network or platform
- An assigned and selected group
- Another connected user in that group
A radio may power on, show menus, and display signal bars while remaining unable to communicate. Normal PoC operation requires both an internet connection and a working Talk2Me platform connection.
Cellular Data and Supported Wi-Fi
Cellular data
Most Talk2Me PoC radios use a preinstalled cellular-data SIM. Cellular data may allow communication across a city, between counties, across state lines, between distant business locations, during travel, and in other supported locations.
Actual service depends on:
- Available carrier coverage
- Network conditions and congestion
- The cellular-data plan
- The radio’s supported cellular bands
- Building construction and terrain
- Roaming availability
A radio cannot create cellular coverage where no compatible network is available.
Supported Wi-Fi
Certain Talk2Me radios may use Wi-Fi as an alternative internet connection. Wi-Fi may help when cellular signal is weak indoors, the radio is used at a fixed location, cellular service is temporarily unavailable, or a compatible internet connection is available.
Wi-Fi does not:
- Renew an expired SIM
- Activate a suspended SIM
- Create cellular coverage
- Convert the radio into a telephone
- Guarantee operation on every public, school, hotel, business, or government network
Some networks may block the traffic required by the radio. Wi-Fi support and setup procedures vary by model.
PoC Compared With Traditional UHF/VHF Radio
Traditional two-way radios communicate directly over radio frequencies. Their usable range may depend on frequency, transmit power, antenna, terrain, buildings, repeaters, licensing, and local interference.
Traditional UHF/VHF radios normally do not require cellular service or internet access. Depending on the frequencies used, they may require an FCC license or other authorization.
Radios containing both systems
Some Talk2Me Rescue radios include both PoC and separate UHF/VHF capability.

The two systems operate independently. PoC may work while no UHF/VHF channels are programmed, and UHF/VHF may work while cellular PoC service is Offline.
Purchasing a radio does not authorize transmission on any UHF or VHF frequency. Talk2Me does not preprogram unauthorized frequencies, and the customer and operator are responsible for lawful use.
Talk2Me Networks, Groups, and Usernames
What is a Talk2Me network?
A network is the communication platform assigned to the radio. Depending on the account, available services may include:
- Public Radio Service (PRS)
- Community Radio Service (CRS), when available and assigned
- HamLink
- A Talk2Me private network
- Another assigned Talk2Me service
The selected network determines which groups and users are available. Two radios cannot communicate merely because both are Talk2Me radios. They generally must be online, authorized for the same compatible network, and using the same group.
What is a group?
A group is the talk channel used within a PoC network. When a user transmits to a group, the other online members of that group may hear the communication.
Groups may be organized by family, department, vehicle, work crew, location, event, dispatch operation, security team, management, or another customer-defined purpose.
Shared and private communication
Shared platforms may allow communication with authorized users outside the customer’s organization. A private network limits communication to radios and users assigned to that customer’s network.
Private networks may be appropriate for families, businesses, security operations, transportation companies, farms, churches, nonprofit organizations, events, and work crews.
Authorized private-network administrators may receive Platform Manager access for supported user and group-management tasks.
Radio usernames
Each platform account has a username or radio identity. It may represent a person, vehicle, department, position, unit number, amateur-radio callsign, location, or business function.
One physical radio may have more than one platform account when assigned to multiple Talk2Me networks. Its username may therefore differ between platforms.
IMEI, Platform Account Numbers, and SIM ICCID

The main radio IMEI may also be used as a primary platform account number in some configurations. A radio may also have one or more additional platform account numbers.
Do not assume that every number shown on the radio is the IMEI. When contacting support, provide the number exactly as shown and identify its label.
On supported models, the SIM ICCID may appear under:
Menu → Settings → Service Information
Do not remove the SIM merely to locate the ICCID when it can be viewed through the radio menu. Do not publicly post a complete IMEI or ICCID.
What Happens When Cellular Service Expires?
When the cellular-data plan expires or is suspended:
- The radio may show Offline, No Service, or Searching Network.
- Cellular PoC communication stops.
- Talk2Me platforms become unavailable through cellular data.
- The customer continues to own the physical radio.
- Supported Wi-Fi may still provide PoC communication while the platform account remains active.
- Separate UHF/VHF functions may continue operating.
Renewing an eligible SIM restores cellular data after processing when the SIM, plan, radio, and account remain properly configured. Wi-Fi does not renew or reactivate the SIM itself.
PoC Radios Are Not Cellular Telephones
Talk2Me PoC platforms do not connect to ordinary telephone service. Standard PoC communication cannot:
- Call regular telephone numbers
- Receive ordinary telephone calls
- Contact 911
- Replace a cellular telephone
- Receive calls from the public telephone network
Some specific radio models may separately support ordinary telephone calling when the customer uses a compatible voice-capable SIM and service plan. That telephone capability is separate from Talk2Me PoC service.
Emergency-service limitation
Talk2Me PoC service cannot contact 911, and the Talk2Me Support Center is not an emergency-dispatch service. Do not rely on a PoC radio as the only method of emergency communication. Maintain another approved way to contact emergency services.

Important limitations
PoC service may be affected by:
- Lack of cellular or internet coverage
- Weak indoor signal
- Carrier congestion or maintenance
- Regional outages
- Expired or suspended SIM service
- Incorrect network or group selection
- Platform-account or assignment problems
- Restricted Wi-Fi networks
- Battery, power, antenna, or hardware failure
No wireless communication service can guarantee coverage or availability in every location or circumstance.
Push-to-Talk Etiquette
- Listen before transmitting.
- Use the correct network and group.
- Press and hold PTT before beginning to speak.
- Wait a brief moment before speaking.
- Identify yourself when appropriate.
- Keep messages clear and brief.
- Release PTT when finished.
- Avoid interrupting another user.
- Reduce unnecessary background noise.
- Follow platform and organizational rules.
PoC may have a brief delay because the transmission travels through the radio, cellular or Wi-Fi network, internet routing, Talk2Me platform, and the recipient’s connection. Waiting briefly after pressing PTT helps prevent the first word from being cut off.
Testing multiple radios nearby
Testing radios close together may create loud feedback. Separate the radios, reduce speaker volume, confirm the same network and group, and transmit from one radio at a time.
Private Network Management
Authorized administrators may use Platform Manager for supported tasks such as:
- Viewing radio users and supported account information
- Editing supported usernames
- Creating and editing groups
- Assigning users to groups
- Reviewing supported radio information
Platform Manager does not replace the Talk2Me Support Center. SIM, license, hardware, platform, and certain account changes may still require Talk2Me assistance.
Can Another SIM Be Used?
Some compatible radios may technically support another cellular SIM. A replacement SIM would need compatible cellular bands, cellular data, the correct physical size, appropriate APN configuration, coverage in the intended area, and a suitable data plan.
Talk2Me platform access remains separate from cellular service. Installing another SIM does not automatically:
- Create a Talk2Me account
- Add PRS, CRS, HamLink, or private-network access
- Transfer a username
- Transfer platform licensing
- Transfer the original SIM plan or renewal record
Contact Talk2Me before changing the SIM in a configured radio.
Do Not Factory-Reset or Modify the Radio
A configured Talk2Me radio may contain settings required for cellular connection, platform access, networks, groups, usernames, applications, and background services.
Do not:
- Factory-reset the radio
- Root or unlock the operating system
- Change firmware
- Install unsupported applications
- Change APN or carrier settings
- Remove or move the SIM
- Use unauthorized programming software
Unauthorized changes may cause service failure and may affect warranty eligibility.
Is PoC Right for Me?
A PoC radio may be appropriate when:
- Users are spread across a large geographic area.
- Cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is available.
- Simple push-to-talk communication is preferred.
- A private communication network is needed.
- Radios must communicate across cities or states.
- Several groups or departments must communicate.
- Vehicle, handheld, and base radios need to share a network.
A traditional UHF/VHF system may be more appropriate when:
- Internet service is unavailable.
- Local direct radio communication is required.
- The customer has the necessary licensing and authorization.
- A repeater system is already available.
- Independent off-network communication is necessary.
Some customers use both systems.
