26 Rescue Handheld: Analog Channels, Scanning, Tones, and Frequency Saving

The Talk2Me custom 26 Rescue Handheld build covers 136–520 MHz and ships with 22 GMRS channels, 5 MURS channels and 7 NOAA weather frequencies. Analog operation can work without cellular data.

Select the VFO and transmit button

Choose Analog or Mix in Green > Work Mode. Press * / A/B for Analog, then # / VFO to select A or B. The arrow identifies the line used for edits. With Analog PTT 2 On, middle PTT transmits A and bottom PTT transmits B. With it Off, middle PTT transmits the active VFO and bottom PTT runs SK1.

Before transmitting

Check the channel and listen first. Use frequencies and equipment authorized for your service. NOAA is receive-only, and a programmed channel is not permission to transmit.

Enter and save a frequency

  1. Press * / A/B for Analog and # / VFO to select the intended A or B line. Check the arrow.
  2. With Analog highlighted, hold # / VFO and enter the frequency with the keypad.
  3. Hold # / VFO again until Save to --- appears.
  4. Enter the three-digit destination channel, including leading zeros, for example 008.
  5. Press * / A/B to save.
  6. Select the saved channel and verify its frequency and Channel Setting values.

Saving can overwrite a channel

If the destination already contains a frequency, saving replaces it. Check all three channel digits before pressing * / A/B.

Name, offset or delete a stored channel

Select and verify the active channel first.

TaskProcedure
NameGreen > Channel Setting > Channel Name. Press # to cycle ABC, abc and 123. Pause before another letter on the same key. Up moves the cursor backward; Down moves it forward. Use the displayed Ok control and verify the saved name.
OffsetGreen > Channel Setting > Offset Setting. Choose Plus or Minus Offset Direction, enter Offset Freq, and verify the resulting transmit frequency. For an external repeater, receive its output and transmit its input; for simplex, check for unintended offsets.
Delete stored channelHold 3 on the selected channel. Choose Ok to delete or Cancel to keep it. This differs from removing a channel from the scan list.

Scan stored channels

  1. Open Channel Setting > 8 Scan Add & Del. Add includes a channel; Delete excludes it from scanning without deleting the stored channel.
  2. Hold 4 to start scanning and hold 4 again to stop.
  3. Use Channel Setting > Jumping Frequency to skip an active channel, such as a continuous NOAA weather broadcast.

Match analog channel settings

SettingChoices and checks
BandwidthWide or Narrow; use the setting required for the channel.
Output PowerHigh Power or Low Power; use a permitted setting for the service.
RX CTCSSOff, CTCSS, NDCS or IDCS. A mismatched receive filter can hide traffic.
TX CTCSSOff, CTCSS, NDCS or IDCS. Match the required tone or code of the receiving radio or repeater.
Study CodeReceive learning mode; keep Off for normal operation.

Tones and codes do not provide privacy or encryption. Verify receive/transmit frequencies, offsets and signaling before an authorized radio check.
